The Chartered Risk Management Institute of Nigeria (CRMI) has reinforced its commitment to promoting risk management education, youth innovation, and national development through the successful hosting of its maiden CRMI University Risk Management Pitching Essay Competition, an initiative designed to engage university students in identifying practical solutions to Nigeria’s development challenges through strategic risk management.

The competition, held on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, was organised under the theme, “Building a Resilient Nigeria Through Strategic Risk Management.” It provided a platform for participating students to demonstrate their analytical capabilities, innovative thinking, problem-solving skills, and understanding of how effective risk management can contribute to sustainable development.

The initiative reflects CRMI’s recognition that risk management is no longer limited to corporate compliance or the protection of organisational assets. It is an essential tool for effective governance, economic growth, institutional stability, business sustainability, and national resilience.

Empowering the Next Generation of Risk Professionals

The competition brought together students from participating Nigerian universities. Through their essays and presentations, the students were challenged to examine critical issues affecting Nigeria and propose innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions informed by strategic risk management principles.

The competition was structured to encourage participants to move beyond identifying risks to developing actionable responses. Participants were assessed on their understanding of risk management principles, analysis of Nigeria’s development challenges, depth of analysis, innovation, feasibility of proposed solutions, quality of presentation and writing, and use of supporting evidence.

The pitching session offered finalists an opportunity to present their proposals, defend their recommendations, and demonstrate how their ideas could contribute to building stronger institutions, more resilient businesses, and a more sustainable Nigerian economy.

Bridging Academia and Professional Practice

A major objective of the initiative is to strengthen the connection between academic learning and the practical application of risk management.

By engaging university students in real-world development issues, CRMI seeks to nurture a generation of forward-thinking professionals capable of anticipating uncertainty, evaluating emerging threats, identifying opportunities, and developing strategies that support long-term value creation.

The competition also provides an opportunity to deepen students’ appreciation of risk management as a strategic discipline relevant to virtually every sector of the economy, including banking and finance, energy, public administration, technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship.

At a time when organisations and nations face increasing economic uncertainty, technological disruption, cybersecurity threats, governance challenges, climate-related risks, and geopolitical pressures, the ability to identify, assess, and manage risks effectively has become indispensable.

CRMI believes that introducing these principles early in students’ academic and professional journeys will help prepare them to become responsible leaders, innovative entrepreneurs, and competent risk management practitioners.

Advancing CRMI’s Commitment to Professional Development

The maiden competition forms part of the Institute’s broader commitment to advancing risk management education, strengthening professional capacity, and promoting a risk-aware culture across Nigeria.

As the Institute celebrates its 25th Annual International Conference and 25th Anniversary, the initiative underscores the importance of investing in young people and creating opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to national conversations on resilience and sustainable development.

The competition also aligns with the Institute’s broader vision of encouraging organisations, institutions, and individuals to integrate risk management into strategic planning, decision-making, and performance management.

Through initiatives such as this, CRMI continues to promote the understanding that resilience is not achieved by eliminating every risk, but by developing the capacity to anticipate challenges, adapt to changing circumstances, respond effectively to disruptions, and emerge stronger.

Recognising Excellence and Innovation

The competition was designed to recognise outstanding ideas, encourage healthy academic competition, and reward students who demonstrate exceptional promise in applying risk management concepts to practical challenges.

Prizes for the competition include ₦1.5 million for the first-place winner, ₦1 million for the second-place winner, and ₦500,000 for the third-place winner, alongside plaques. The fourth- and fifth-place finalists are to receive certificates of recognition AND FREE AUTOMATIC MEMBERSHIP OF THE INSTITUTE. The initiative also includes opportunities to encourage continued engagement with the Institute through student membership and professional development.

At the end of the competition, Dominican University emerged as the winner, while Covenant and Ajayi Crowther Universities were the first and second runners-up, respectively.

Beyond the awards, the competition offers participants valuable exposure to professional standards, constructive evaluation, presentation skills, and the expectations of a career in risk management.

Building a More Resilient Nigeria

The CRMI University Risk Management Challenge and Pitching Essay Competition represents an important step towards embedding risk awareness, strategic thinking, and resilience into Nigeria’s educational and professional landscape.

By encouraging students to approach national challenges through the lens of risk management, the Institute is helping to cultivate the knowledge, creativity, and leadership required to support a more resilient future.

As Nigeria continues to navigate economic reforms, institutional transformation, technological advancement, and evolving global uncertainties, initiatives that empower young people to develop evidence-based and implementable solutions remain vital.

Through this maiden edition, CRMI has demonstrated that building a resilient Nigeria requires not only strong institutions and sound policies, but also a new generation of professionals equipped to anticipate uncertainty, make informed decisions, and turn risks into opportunities for sustainable progress.
